Ian Gillespie is the Group CEO of RACQ (The Royal Automobile Club of Queensland Limited), a position he has held since 2006. RACQ is an iconic organisation, a public company mutually owned by its 1.5 million members. Ian is a highly experienced senior corporate executive with a background in law. Ian has enjoyed a diverse career path, which includes advisory, functional and line management roles across a broad range of industries, and extensive international experience as a general manager and CEO. He is presently the Director of: the Business Council of Co-operatives and Mutuals, The Confederation of Australian Motor Sport, the RACQ Foundation and the Australian Automobile Association. Ian is also the Chairman of Australian Motoring Services and Vice Chairman of Global Mobility Alliance. He has previously been the Director of Tourism and Events Queensland.
The middle of three children, Ian was born in Manly, Sydney. He spent some of his formative years in Cooma in New South Wales and Canberra, before returning to Sydney where he attended St Aloysius College, until 1973. Following high school, Ian moved straight into university, studying industrial relations as a part of an arts degree at the University of New South Wales. Ian began his career as an Industrial Relations Officer at Blue Circle Southern Cement Limited, where he remained for eight years. It was there, he “cut his teeth” while also studying law part-time. In 1998, Ian completed a General Management Program at Cranfield University in England. In 2008, Ian was honoured with the Australian Institute of Management Professional Manager of the Year Award. He lives in Brisbane with his family.
